Healthy snack bars

What comes to mind when you think of a healthy snack?

Maybe you picture a small plate of crisp apple slices with a generous dollop of peanut butter, or maybe more likely, you imagine some of your favourite breakfast bars, packed with dried fruit, dark chocolate chunks, and healthy nuts.

As more people have become aware of the crucial role that optimal nutrition plays in our overall well-being, granola bars have become the go-to snack for the health-conscious crowd — chewy or crunchy, protein-packed or fibre-fuelled, granola bars can make everyone happy!

But did you know that not all snack bars are created equal?

Most breakfast bars are filled to the brim with added sugars and artificial sweeteners, making for a satisfying snack for our sweet tooth, but a much less ideal option for our appetite regulation.

The problem with most snack bars (and yes, even the ones that are marketed as healthy) comes down to one simple thing: macronutrient to micronutrient ratio.

Here’s all you need to know about your macros and micros, why they matter if you’re looking to improve your diet, and how Hiya Snack Bars are walking the talk when it comes to balanced nutrition!

The wonderful world of macros and micros

So, what do we mean when we talk about macronutrients and micronutrients?

There are three macronutrients that make up all the food we eat, and we need to consume large quantities of them every day to fuel our bodies with the energy we need:

  • Carbohydrates
  • Protein
  • Fats

Regardless of the type of diet we follow, the adult human body needs approximately 45-65% of our daily calories to come from carbs, 10-35% from protein, and 20-35% from fats.

If you want to follow a healthier, more nutritious diet and stay full for longer, you’ll want to opt for complex carbs (starches, brown rice, wholewheat pasta) over simple carbs and healthy fats (coconut oil, avocado, nuts, and seeds) over trans fats!

There are many more micronutrients than there are macronutrients, and how much of each nutrient we really need to eat will vary according to age, gender, and lifestyle.

Generally speaking, we can divide micronutrients into four categories:

  • Water-soluble vitamins
  • Fat-soluble vitamins
  • Minerals
  • Trace minerals

Some of the most important vitamins we need to consume daily are vitamin C, vitamin B, vitamin B12, and vitamin D, while minerals include essential nutrients like iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and zinc.

If macronutrients are our primary source of energy, micronutrients are instead essential for getting our body’s complex machinery working as it should, from our immune system to brain health. And where do we get our vitamins and minerals from? Well, it’s all about plants: greens, beans, fruits, nuts, and seeds!

Getting healthy with micros

The problem with many of our daily meals and our “healthy” granola bars is that they tend to focus on macronutrients only, packing products with carbs, protein, and fats for energy without paying attention to the real stars of the show: vitamins and minerals!

Eating a variety of micronutrient-rich foods every day is not only essential for keeping all of our body’s systems performing at the top of their game, but it’s also fundamental for keeping us full and satisfied with every meal — no matter how many calories we’re consuming.

If you want to get healthy without skimping on taste and feeling hungry all the time, there’s no easier way of regulating your appetite naturally than incorporating a mix of healthy macros and nutritious micros into your daily diet, starting with your snacks!
