Healthy and Gluten Free Chickpea Snacks
Healthy eating starts with the right snacks. If you’re looking for an easy gluten-free, low GI, and vegan snack, look no further than our chickpea snacks!

Who doesn’t love a good snack?

Between crisps and popcorn, the UK savoury snack market is one of the largest in Europe, and we’re definitely one of the top consumers when it comes to buying plenty of snacks every week.

But if you’re on your yearly health kick and looking for exciting healthy snacks to keep you full and fuelled throughout the day, you’re going to have to get more creative!

Contrary to popular belief, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, and carrot sticks are far from the only healthy snacks you can incorporate into your daily diet.

Let’s bring over to the stage the real hero of healthy eating: Chickpea snacks!

Chickpeas are a type of legume, a food group known for its high nutritional value, and they are a rich source of vitamins, gut-healthy fibre, and plant protein.

As an added bonus, these incredible beans are also naturally gluten free!

Heart-healthy and delicious

Inexpensive, allergen-friendly, and endlessly versatile, a trusty can of chickpeas can go a long way in helping you through a healthier lifestyle — whatever that looks like for you.

Chickpeas are packed with essential nutrients, protein, and fibre, making for a filling and gut-healthy snack or the perfect addition to a balanced meal.

One cup of cooked chickpeas provides almost 15 grams of plant protein, 12.5 grams of fibre, 74% of your recommended daily intake of manganese, and 71% of your daily value of folate.

Manganese and folate (also known as vitamin B9) are essential micronutrients playing an important role in fat and carbs metabolism, blood sugar regulation, and red blood cells production.

Chickpeas are also a good source of copper, iron, zinc, and phosphorous, all while containing very few calories and fat!

Now, we’re not going to call them a wonder food… but if you’re looking for a nutritious and diet-friendly kitchen staple, few plant-based and gluten-free ingredients come close to what chickpeas can offer!

Dry chickpeas or canned chickpeas?

Chickpeas in bowl

Chickpeas not only make for a satisfying snack when roasted or blended to make delicious hummus, but they are also great for adding to salads, curries, and vegetable stews.

You can even have them on their own!

If you’re searching the internet for the perfect chickpea recipe to try out, you’re probably going to come across an age-old debate: Should you be using canned chickpeas or dried chickpeas?

Generally speaking, there is little difference between the two when it comes to taste and texture, even though dried chickpeas tend to have a stronger flavour and are free from preservatives.

Not to mention, using dried beans is always a more affordable and environmentally friendly option!

But in many ways, canned chickpeas are a lot more convenient to use, especially if you’re planning on using them to make a quick and healthy snack.

Canned beans are also a lot more accessible, as you can find them in any shop!

A heritage ingredient like no other

Punjab Vegan, gluten free bars

The chickpea flour we use as the base for our bars is an ingredient very close to our hearts and our Punjabi heritage.

Chickpea flour, also known as gram flour, is a Punjabi staple used in both sweet and savoury recipes. You’ll find chickpea flour in a variety of pakoras and even flatbreads, as well as in sweet recipes like besan halwa and dhokla.

Either roasted chickpeas or raw chickpeas can be used as the base, before grinding them finely and sifting carefully.

Gram flour is naturally gluten free and much more nutritious than other types of flour, as it contains plenty of protein and fibre — we just can’t wait to share this wonderful ingredient from our childhood with you!
